Church in focus
Belper-
Jubilee Hall, New Road, Belper,
Derbyshire DE56 1UR.
Spiritualism was active in Belper long before the Church was built.
Meetings were held in an upper room of a Mr W P Adsheads building in Campbell
St. It was from friends at these meetings that a desire was born to have and
build a church where they could worship and hold services together. Thoughts
and wishes reached fruition in Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Year 1887. Mr Adsheads
laid the foundation stone and the building was named Jubille Hall. It is due to
the dedication and wisdom of the pioneers of long ago that we have this grand
Church in Belper today.
In 1889 the Pipe Organ was installed by George Benson and Son’ organ builders of Manchester. It is due to past Presidents, Mr A Smedley, Mr A Bodell, Mr F W Wheeldon and the late Mr G H Hawkins, organist 1936 – 1993 who at his own expense, maintained the organ until he was called to higher service, that we have this fine musical instrument to accompany our Church services today.
